Website for pioneering cancer research

Brightlight undertakes pioneering research with teenagers and young adults to improve their experience and outcome after a cancer diagnosis. Working with web agency Wholegrain, we redesigned their website, refreshed the content and upgraded the website to a secure, sustainable platform where updates could be made easily.

Brightlight approached us to refresh their existing logo to incorporate the year and roll this out across the relevant parts of their website.

Pathway to Excellence campaign

The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL) is a leading integrated provider of NHS services. We designed a campaign identity for the trust’s nursing excellence programme, ensuring it stood out and encouraging staff engagement. The campaign helped pave the way for (UHL) to be the only UK trust to gain Pathway to Excellence® accreditation at two of its hospitals.

Promoting Research Champions

The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL) is a leading integrated provider of NHS services. To promote research input from nurses and other clinical staff, we produced designs and copy for the Research Links programme, to support a successful internal communications campaign identifying the key ward staff with a research focus.

Inspire journal

The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL) is a leading integrated provider of NHS services. UHL believed that many of its nurses and other clinical staff were engaged in leading-edge healthcare practice that had wide applicability. However, these initiatives were often not formally tested or disseminated. To help bridge the gap, UHL proposed launching an in-house staff research journal, to be distributed in print and digitally.

We worked with colleagues at UHL to design the journal and agree an editorial production process, and supported UHL with production of the first year’s issues. The Inspire journal acted as a conduit for the spread of existing good practice, and to promote further research

Nursing excellence campaign materials

We were asked to produce campaign materials to encourage nominations for the DAISY nursing excellence awards at an NHS trust. These included forms and ballot boxes, badges and certificates. The campaign encouraged patients, their friends and families to show appreciation and gratitude for the care patients received, supporting increased engagement and satisfaction among patients and staff.

Exemplar Wards

To support their exemplar wards excellence programme, an award-winning London teaching hospital trust asked us to create materials including a staff handbook, yearbook and a tube map-styled poster. The materials celebrated outstanding performance across the trust and supported teams’ understanding of the steps required to maintain and achieve excellence.

Social Mobility Commission annual reports

The Social Mobility Commission, part of the Department for Education, promotes social mobility in England. Twice in a row we won the contract to produce the Commission's annual report, which presents comprehensive data on child poverty across the UK.

Our team worked with the Commission to produce and implement a house style for text and data visualisations. Working to a tight schedule, we delivered the report to the UK Parliament on time and on budget, working with senior figures within the Commission to ensure quality control and editorial approval.

At a time when austerity was still a central plank of economic policy, this ensured that the Commission's important messages about reducing child poverty and inequality were heard across Government.

Promoting young people’s mental health

Research led by Hillingdon Healthwatch showed that mental health services for young people in the area were disjointed and under increasing pressure. We produced a short film to highlight the issues, along with a report based on research undertaken with young people, their parents and mental health professionals. The results were distributed to local schools and service providers and shared online. The project encouraged a move towards better communication between providers and more ‘joined-up’ services.

Primary care data visualisation

We prepared a slide deck for the Nuffield Trust as part of a joint project with The King’s Fund to highlight the results of a survey into the attitudes of clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) to reform. The results revealed optimism about upcoming changes to their commissioning role, though suggested that careful implementation will be key.

Energy research aims to keep the lights on

Sustainable energy production that keeps “lights on, and bills down” is key to reducing Britain’s greenhouse gas emissions, according to the UK Energy Research Centre, based at Imperial College London. We designed a newsletter to help the Centre increase engagement with their research programme and encourage contribution to the debate.

MBC supplied a knowledgeable and responsive service with clear communication, and took the time to understand our needs.

Young people’s cancer service booklet

The Teenage Cancer Trust
Teenagers and Young People’s
Cancer Service at UCLH is the primary treatment centre for teenage cancer in London and the South East. We were asked to co-write and design a brochure for GPs detailing the services offered and explaining how to refer patients to the Unit.

The brochure has just been reprinted for a second time.
